The sago palm is a survivor from the age of dinosaurs, and it looks it — a crown of glossy, deep-green fronds unfurling from a stout trunk, equally at home in formal pots or tropical-style beds.
Slow growing and very long lived, it takes full sun to part shade and is extremely drought hardy once settled. Free-draining soil is essential. One serious caution: every part of a cycas is highly toxic to dogs, so choose its position with pets in mind.
